Thread Count in Bedsheets Explained: What Number Should You Actually Look For?

Thread Count Blog – Homio

Walk into any bedsheet section online or offline and the first thing that hits you is the numbers. 200 TC. 400 TC. 1000 TC. Some brands make it sound like the higher you go, the better your sleep will be. Spend more, sleep more. Simple, right?

Not really.

Thread count is one of the most misunderstood numbers in the home linen world, and a lot of people end up overpaying for sheets that aren't actually better, just denser. So let's clear it up once and for all.

What Thread Count Actually Means

Thread count (TC) is simply the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric counting both the horizontal threads (weft) and the vertical ones (warp). So 150 threads going across + 150 threads going down = 300 TC. That's it. Nothing complicated about the math.

Where it gets complicated is what brands do with that math.

Some manufacturers use multi-ply yarn essentially twisting 2 or 3 thinner threads together and counting each strand separately. So what's actually a 300 TC fabric gets marketed as 600 TC or even 900 TC. The thread count has doubled. The quality? Hasn't moved an inch.

The Myth of "Higher is Better"

Here's the honest truth: thread count is a measure of quantity, not quality. Anything between 300 and 500 TC in long-staple cotton is genuinely high-quality without compromising breathability. Once you cross 800 TC, sheets can actually become too dense for Indian weather, less air circulation, more heat retention.

Which, in a country where summers regularly cross 40°C, is the last thing you want from your bedsheet.

A thread count between 200 and 400 is often the sweet spot for allowing airflow while maintaining comfort especially when the base fabric is 100% cotton.

The thing that actually determines quality? The cotton itself.

What to Actually Look For

  • Fibre length matters more than the number Long-staple cotton, which is the kind used in better-quality pure cotton bedsheets, produces smoother, stronger yarns that feel softer over time and don't pill. Short-staple cotton can give you a high TC on paper but will feel rough after a few washes.
  • Single-ply yarn over multi-ply Single-ply yarns genuinely outperform multi-ply constructions. Multi-ply can inflate thread count but tends to compromise on softness. If a brand is advertising 800 TC at a suspiciously low price, it's almost certainly multi-ply.
  • Weave type changes everything Same TC, completely different feel depending on the weave. Percale weave gives you a crisp, cool finish, ideal for summer. Sateen gives you that silky, smooth drape, better for cooler months or if you just love that hotel-sheet feeling. Percale sheets with a thread count between 200 and 400 are known for their cool feel and are well-suited to warm weather, while sateen sheets between 300 and 600 TC offer a softer, smoother texture.

For most Indian homes, especially for double bed bedsheet or pure cotton bedsheet king size, a well-made percale or plain-weave cotton bedsheet in the 300–400 TC range is genuinely all you need.

Our Top Picks for Summer
